LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN NUMBER PLATES
WHAT MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW
A Number Plate is the identification of your vehicle and is subject to the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act No: 93 of 1996 (Regulations 2000), the South African National Standards Specifications (SANS 1116) and the relevant National and Provincial legislation.
NUMBER PLATE SIZES
There are only three legal number plate sizes, namely
The 440 x 120 mm size number plate may not be used on vehicles that were registered for the first time on or after 1 Jan 2010. (National Road Traffic Act of 1996, Regulation 35. Display of Licence Number, Clause 10& Government Gazette No: 29865 of 4 May 2007, Clause 9(f) bl. 8).
MARK OF CERTIFICATION
South African number plate must bear a self destructive certification mark, as per the National Road Traffic Act No: 93 of 1996, Regulation 35, Display of Licence Number, Clause 2 a). The SABS sticker is applied underneath the provincial logo of the embossed number plate and the current design looks as follows:
The SANS1116 specification states that every blank number plate must be marked with a readable and indestructible mark and must contain the following information:-
ATTACHMENT OF A NUMBER PLATE
The attachment of the number plate is subject to Clause 7f of Regulation 35. Display of Motor Vehicle License Number of the National Road Traffic Act of 1996 and stipulated in Government Gazette no. 34407 of 29 June 2011.Afore mentioned Clause states that the number plates of all vehicle that were registered for the first time on or after 1 Jan 2010 must be attachedto the vehicle by 4mm rivets or 4mm one way self tapping screws.It can be either attached directly to the vehicle, or on an integral part thereof or onto an intermidate holding bracket, which complies to SANS 973 and approved by the National Department of Transport.
GRAPHIC DESIGN AND REFLECTIVE SHEETING
The graphic background design of South African Number plates is determined by the MEC of the relevant province.The validation mark of the supplier of the retro-reflective sheeting must form an integral part of the material and must be readable and indestructible. Please see the photos below of blank number plates, which are the only legal formats allowed for public use:-
